Session Information:
Three speakers will present various physiotherapy approaches to managing different patient populations.

  • Dr. Fernández-Lao will examine whether manual therapy-based physiotherapy improves mouth opening, perception of temporomandibular disorders, cervical function, and certain shoulder movements in head and neck cancer survivors.
  • Mme. Aldhwaya will discuss the complex deficits experienced by breast cancer patients and survivors throughout their recovery journey, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach that addresses physical, mental, and emotional needs through tailored rehabilitation.
  • Mme. Ibrahim will address the management of complex lymphedema cases in the gynecological population, highlighting that lymphedema management should extend beyond breast cancer to include other populations such as gynecological, head and neck, sarcoma, melanoma, and genitourinary cancer patients.

Dr. Carolina Fernández-Lao

 

Dr. Carolina Fernández-Lao is a Lecturer at Physiotherapy Department of the University of Granada (Spain) and researcher at Institute for Biomedical Research, and holds a PhD focused on physiotherapy procedures for the recovery of cancer survivors with pain and dysfunction.  She leads a granted project on the management of persistent pain in oncology population with a research interest is in the recovery of oncology population through multimodal programs based on pain education, therapeutic exercise, and manual therapy.

 

Nouf Mohammed Aldhwayan

 

Nouf Mohammed Aldhwayan, MSc, PT, CLT trainer. Outpatient Supervisor of the Physical Rehabilitation Department, at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, Saudi Arabia. Has a Master’s degree in healthcare management from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2010. She is an official Instructor of the Academy of Lymphatic studies, Oncology lead of the International Physiotherapists in HIV/AIDS, Oncology, & Hospice; Head of Oncology Subgroup in the Saudi Physiotherapy Association; Co-founder of Saudi Arabia Lymphedema Framework & Co-Founder of Zahra Breast Cancer Association.

 

Marize Ibrahim

 

Marize Ibrahim, MSc, PT, CLT-LANA is a physiotherapist and a licensed lymphedema therapist working at the McGill University Hospital Centre Lymphedema Clinic, a Lymphatic Education and Research Network of Excellence. Marize attended the UofT & pursued a Master in Physical Therapy from McGill University. She is a Physiotherapy Specialty Clinical Specialist in Oncology, has published numerous peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, invited as a guest speaking at several national & international conferences and is currently a lecturer at the McGill University.
